MAG Borisov: in charcoal, in hell – from nature

A young but infernally talented artist Maxim Borisov… He is not Max. He is Mage Borisov, and dark – a distant descendant of the ancient Greek god Hephaestus, who has the gift of moving himself from the world of the living to the world of the dead. And back again.

His charcoal works on cardboard won’t let go, like a burn, like a sin, like a shame.

It seems as if he painted these pictures from life – right in hell.

He would grab coals from under the hot cauldron and draw.

Drawing. Drawing. Drawing.

All those socialites, goddesses of the half-light, beautiful and expensive courtesans. For their transgressions, thrown in a moment from the hot, wet sheets straight into the furnace!

Into the boiling tar!

Max Borisov.

There is shock on their faces. Their eyes are screaming. And their lips, just a moment ago eager for kisses and Prosecco, are already cracking like craquelure on Da Vinci canvases. They’re about to be too damn happy to even take a sip of plain water.

And Magician Borisov is the only man on Earth capable of capturing their elusive beauty on cardboard at the last moment.

And bring him back to the world of the living. At least in the form of a drawing.

There is something in his charcoal works from the Fayum funerary portraits of ancient Egypt. There, the portrait of the deceased was painted on a wooden board before mummification and burial. To make it easier for the god of the kingdom of Darkness to identify the deceased. The Fayum portrait was believed to convey not only the facial features of the deceased, but also his soul.

Mage Borisov does something similar. Only with him it is the other way around. His charcoal portraits return to us, the living, the faces of those who have already sunk into oblivion and we cannot see them any other way.

It’s all magic and navy.

That’s why he’s in a hurry. Both he and his unwilling models have literally only a moment to leave a trace in eternity – in charcoal on paper.

Yes, ladies, it’s not like taking selfies in an expensive elevator in Dubai…..

There are no takes in hell, nor can there be.

And we need to hurry. The first solo exhibition of Max Borisov’s work – in Moscow at Tverskaya, 9 in ART-Space gallery – will not last long. It’s a pity! But there is still a chance to see hell through Mag Borisov’s eyes.

And, of course, his infernal sitters.

There’s definitely nowhere else like it!

Max Borisov.
