Max Borisov’s Sirens: a doom-laden delight….

There are art exhibitions whose encounter is inevitable. Predestined, unavoidable, magnetic, fateful, prophetic. They are fatal and phantom at the same time. Like the stupefying call of sea sirens – on the verge of death and ecstasy.

I’m afraid THIS exhibition will become a place of pilgrimage not only for fans of “Battle of the Psychics”, but also for a legion of hunters to everything forbidden….

On the opening day of this exhibition, even the cars on Tverskaya Street in Moscow did not snap or quack. Their horns and sirens suddenly revealed not anger and irritation, but something mystical – moans, shouts, appeals. It was as if they were accompanying someone, playing along. Someone whose power extended to car horns as well.

The reason? The opening of an exhibition with the laconic title “MB”. Minimalism, peculiar to young art blood.

“MB” are the initials of the young artist Max Borisov (Max Borisov). His first solo exhibition occupied the entire floor of the International Exhibition Center ART-SPACE at 9 Tverskaya Street.

Impressions?! There were none!

That word is nowhere near MB. It’s a completely different format or level of interaction with someone else’s work.

It’s a collision. An uncontrollable fall. The unmitigated plunge.

Literally invisible sirens pulled me out of the street flow and shoved me headfirst into a huge aquarium. Because the floor with Max Borisov’s works is indeed associated with a man-made reservoir – a place where not decorative Sirens live at all.

His work is absolutely alive. And extremely reactive. They contain screams, pain, despair, intoxication, buzz, love moans, trembling… They attract attention and do not let go until the flesh of the “victim” begins to break free – in an impulse of self-preservation – from the clutches of the sweet-voiced daughters of Melpomene.

Talent? Absolutely.

Of course, once we are out in the air again, outside the aquarium, we can think of a lot of things about the young genius. For example, we can emphasize the role of archetypes and shadows in his work, i.e. the collective unconscious with its quirks, twists and unbridledness.

Well, yes, young people, especially the talented ones, are characterized by the behavior of a “trickster”. An evil jester – an uncompromising denouncer of other people’s vices and shortcomings. The alter-ego of the “trickster”, his shadow – a “magician”, a sorcerer, a black sorcerer.

Of course, both “trickster” and “magician” all make themselves known in Max’s works. The desire to be mysterious, evocative, resonant, transverse… Where without it!

As well as the desire to compare his work with others. Although young artists don’t like to be put on the same level, even with the great ones. Who does?!

Max Borisov’s drawings, “with eyes” (as they are already called “for the eyes”) involuntarily remind one of the illustrations by the equally young Ilya Glazunov for Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel “The Idiot”.

But all these speculations and nonsense… They fly away when you come into contact with MB’s paintings.

His Sirens are impossible to resist.

“I feel with a pernicious delight: I’m disappearing, I’m disappearing.” [Vladimir Vysotsky].

You couldn’t be more precise.

Magic.

P.S. Why phantom? Still haven’t let go….
