On October 24, the International Exhibition Complex ART-SPACE opened in Moscow, where a private preview of the exhibition “Africa. Cultural Code”. Mysticism of ancient African ritual masks, diverse artistic canvases of contemporary African artists, sculptures, photographs, as well as fashion defile by HOODSKOOL brand and fashion designers Marina and Taiwo Stefan Fasuya made the opening of the exhibition bright and unforgettable.
The Moscow Public Foundation for Support of Culture and Development of Contemporary Art initiated the creation of the international exhibition complex.
Opening the exhibition, Andrey Kiselev, the founder and head of the Board of Trustees of the Moscow Public Foundation for Support of Culture and Development of Contemporary Art, thanked all those who took an active part in the creation of the new art space. He noted the importance of this international cultural complex as a center of attraction of the power of cultures of all countries and continents in the very center of the Russian capital.
Dmitry Mikhailovich Bondarenko, Professor, Director of the Center for History and Cultural Anthropology of the Institute of African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Alexey Grigorievich Zabelin, Rector of the Moscow Finance and Law University; Alexey Vladimirovich Melnikov, member of the Presidium of the Public Council for Human Rights under the President of the Russian Federation, Executive Secretary of the Public Supervisory Commission of Moscow, addressed the audience with a brief welcoming speech. The speakers noted the importance and relevance of the exhibition dedicated to the culture of the peoples of Africa, drew attention to its important place in the development of world culture and civilization. The diversity and versatility of the exposition was noted. The exhibition was the first large-scale project in the Russian art environment dedicated to the art of Africa in recent times.
The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the Office of the President and the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Ambassadors Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and representatives of Afghanistan, Kenya, Sudan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mexico and Pakistan, “Rossotrudnichestvo”, artists, artists, African scientists, representatives of universities, students of African countries and journalists.

The exhibition presents one of the largest private collections in Russia – more than 850 items: African masks, sculptures and paintings from Burkina Faso, Benin, Ghana, Gabon, Mali, Nigeria, Cameroon, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal and Uganda. A number of Russian artists, including Tatiana Klyat, Svetlana Starchik and Sergey Smirnov (StereoBoogie), presented their vision and reinterpretation of African culture in arts and crafts.
Muscovites and guests of the capital will be able to familiarize themselves with the exhibition “Africa. Cultural Code” until November 17 at the ART-SPACE International Exhibition Complex, 9, Tverskaya Street.
